Studies have shown that the prevalence rate of the HIV/AIDS virus in the police corps is higher than in the general population. This is because policemen and women are in contact with the population. Worse still, they are out of their homes most of the time. This puts them at high risk of the pandemic. It is for this reason that a manual for the training of police men and women on the IST/HIV/AIDS was approved during a one-day workshop at the National Advanced Police School in Yaounde yesterday.
An international team of researchers has developed a novel strategy against HIV. They added two genes to immune cells which 'transformed them into potent weapons that destroy cells infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.' This idea of 'genetically engineering immune cells to redirect their infection-fighting ability toward killing HIV-infected cells could lead to an entirely new approach for combating AIDS.' Sexual and gender Based Violence (SGBV) and HIV/AIDS.
The assignment is a local posting, within the regional office for West Africa, in dakar and the period is one year starting as soon as possible, with a possible extension.
Main area of responsibility :
Under the strategic guidance of the Regional programme Advisor on Protection, be responsible for the implentation of the projects against SGBV and HIV/AIDS within Save the Children Sweden’s Regional pragramme in West Africa.
Description of task/responsabilities :
.To contribute to the strategic duration of the protection programme in the region.
.To be responsible for yhe planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the projects on SGBV and HIV/AIDS.
.To ensure good institutional learnig withing the projets SGBV and HIV/AIDS ; eg documentation of case studies, good praticess and lessons learned, the production and promotion of high quality reportys in French and English.
. To be responsible for the control and reporting on the budget for SGBV and HIV/AIDS.
. To actively contribute to the regional fundraising.
.To ensure continuous situation analysis regarding the state of children’s rights within the protection and specifically within SGBV and HIV/AIDS.
. Coordinate and network with other actors in the country and the region.
Statistics from the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) show that new global HIV prevalence (the percentage of people living with HIV) has levelled off and that the number of new infections has fallen as a result of the impact of HIV programmes.

Thanks to University of Washington (UW) computer scientists, hearing-impaired users might soon be able to use sign language over a mobile phone, like in Japan or Sweden. The research team received a grant from the U.S. National Science Foundation to start a 20-person field project next year in Seattle. Of course, deaf people were already able to use text messages for communication. But as said the lead researcher, 'the point is you want to be able to communicate in your native language. For deaf people that's American Sign Language (ASL).' As you all know, there are more than 33 million people living with AIDS worldwide. No cure or vaccine has been unveiled this week in Mexico during the International AIDS Conference. Still, European researchers have developed a predictive software system for HIV that could help extend the lives of victims of the killer disease. The scientists working on the EuResist project have combined HIV databases in Italy, Sweden and Germany, creating what is probably the largest database on AIDS and HIV in the world. Armed with information about more than 18,000 patients, 64,000 therapies, and 240,000 viral mode measurements, the researchers have created new mathematical prediction models, which should soon be available to medical researchers and doctors all over the world.
