Upgrading the Web in 35 days ()

There are tons of new developer-oriented features in Firefox 3.5 that are waiting to be used to create new Web applications. Geolocation. New canvas features. Native video and audio elements. The amazing Tracemonkey JavaScript engine. The ability to use Web fonts. A flurry of new CSS 3 properties and improvements. These are things that really get me excited because I understand their potential as I've been in the browser business for so long, but can be really hard to grasp for ordinary people in some cases. But the truth is that Firefox 3.5 is a modern browser, part of a movement who wants the Open Web to thrive, with the help of other browser vendors such as Opera, Chrome and Safari. An Open and Generative Web where one can invent new stuff without having to ask permission. hacks.mozilla.org banner So we have to explain how these new features work, and what they enable developers to do. Enter Hacks.mozilla.org, a new blog put together by the Evangelism team, with material provided by the worldwide Mozilla Community. Over the 35 days to come[1], starting today, we'll try to post 2 articles per day. One to demo something really cool, one to explain something new. Get ready to get excited. Get ready to learn new stuff about Web development. The first articles are: Introducing the Hacks.mozilla.org blog by Chris Blizzard. While Firefox 3 was a signifigant upgrade for the web?s users, Firefox 3.5 does the same for developers. Pushing pixels with canvas article, by...

Mozilla Dev Day in Paris: work hard, play hard!... ()

Work hard: Mozilla developers attending the Dev Day in Paris Wladimir Palant: Mozilla Developer Day in Paris was great. (...) 70 XUL developers in one room ? this doesn?t happen too often. ; Mike Schroepfer: absolutely fantastic Developer Day here in Paris. The venue held about 80 people and it was filled to capacity for most of the day. (...) "It's pretty clear that there is a very healthy, engaged, and innovative XUL developer community here in Europe. (...) Dinner was a blast at La Bodega." ; Nukeador: Un fin de semana muy interesante donde he aprendido un montón de cosas y que me ha animado más a seguir colaborando con Mozilla. ("A very interesting week-end where I did learn tons of things and which pushed me in investing more time in Mozilla" for those of us who don't read Spanish); Zbigniew Gandalf Braniecki Mozilla dev days - Paris 2007 Play Hard: mozillians having fun at La Bodega Photos of the event can be found on Flickr.com, tag mozdevdayparis07 and on Benoit's Picasa album. The party was loads of fun: with great music, a dance floor, 55 Mozilla developers and 3 bachelorette parties, what could go wrong?[1] I'd love to thank Anne-Julie (logistics), Peterv (network), Pascal (wiki help) and Shaver (content), along with all the attendees for such a productive and fun event (including the bachelorettes which presence - I promise - was not scheduled). Seeing 2 young ladies assaulting Benoit in order to steal his Firefox "use open ...

11 years after, Mozilla is still exciting... ()

This afternoon, I exchanged a couple of informal emails with a British journalist on various topics, when he asked me: What's the next big news from Mozilla? Mozilla is going to turn 11 next month and well, many things are getting me excited these days, so I gave him a couple of links. I thought I could share them with my readers. Here is the response I gave: We're hard at work to ship Firefox 3.1 which will bring a lot of innovation to Web developers. We're not yet ready to articulate why it's so cool (at least to ordinary people, but we're working on it), but here is a quick demo that will make Web developers cry Another thing that takes a lot of our energy is Firefox for mobile, codenamed Fennec. Mozilla Labs is a new effort that focuses on distributed open innovation. Among their many projects, Ubiquity and Bespin. The market of Web browsers sees innovation, with Google Chrome, and Apple Safari 4 Beta (released today). It's good for the Web, so Mozilla is happy. Since I've responded, Paul Rouget has published yet another cool demo based on the video and canvas elements (if you happen not to have Firefox 3.1 Beta 2 running, you should check Chris Blizzard's screencast)[1]. One thing to note is that we had lunch Paul and I today when we discussed ideas for his next demo. Then the idea of changing the background of a live video popped-up, and in a couple of hours, the video was shot, imported, and the demo was built. It says a lot about the power and simplicity of We...

Bad syntax in Javascript 1.8... ()

Mozilla developers improve day after day Javascript. It's a good thing to improve a language. But I think those who made this improvements in Mozilla should stop smoking the carpet right now. Improvements in javascript 1.6 (Firefox 1.5) were good, although I'm not a fan to pass a callback function...

Mozilla is looking for a Community Marketing Manager in Europe... ()

My colleague Jane Finette just posted fantastic news over at her blog: Mozilla is looking for a Community marketing manager for Europe. Reporting to the Director of European Marketing, the European Community Marketing Manager will be responsible for developing and supporting Mozilla?s open source communities throughout Europe, whilst enabling and assisting communities to promote and spread Mozilla products and vision. Collaborating as part of a global marketing team and working directly with local communities across Europe, primary responsibilities will include defining and implementing regional community campaigns and activities, market research, and day-to-day efforts in order to support community growth and effectiveness. (read the entire job description) The location is flexible (provided that you're based in Europe, that is ;-), but I'm all in favor of having someone based in Paris, with most other people being there. But Jane herself is based in London and we also have offices in Copenhagen, or you could work from home. If you are interested in working for Mozilla, doing marketing and community stuff, then head right now for the full job description and follow the instructions!

Privacy policy on Mozilla-Europe.org... ()

A long overdue privacy policy has just been posted on mozilla-europe.org. As we want to understand better how our Website is used by visitors in order to make it more efficient[1], we need to have a privacy policy. It's now available. No big surprise, as it is very close to the Mozilla Privacy Policy with a European twist. Notes [1] Word of mouth being the strongest vector of distribution by far, the Website is a key tool in putting Firefox into the hands of users.
