 Petit groupe d'experts validant (ou non) les ébauches de normes et de standards Internet qui lui sont communiquées. Description
 L'Internet Engineering Steering Group supervise les travaux menées par la communauté IETF, cette communauté chargée de spécifier des normes et protocoles pour l'Internet (TCP, IP, HTTP, ... et autres systèmes permettant l'interconnexion entre les différents serveurs et ordinateurs constitutifs du web).
L'IESG suit les travaux des différents groupes de travail de l'IETF, créant et dissolvant ces groupes, les remettant dans le droit chemin si nécessaire.
Plus encore, l'IESG examine les recommandations de normes (Internet Drafts) soumises par ces groupes de travail. Une recommandation acceptée devient une RFC (Request for Comments) puis éventuellement un standard du web, après validation par d'autres instances (l'Internet Architecture Board et l'Internet Society).
